Chapter 2: Not such a Happy Birthday, Verse 2
The room was dark and cold, but as she watched, sunlight began to filter through the curtains, lighting it up. She was in an octagonal room, three windows lined one side and some stairs lead up to the room above. The wallpaper was a pale pink. Lining the wall above the windows was a shelf filled with stuffed toys. When Kaiya turned and recognised the small bed shaped like a pink castle, she realized dimly that she was dreaming.
The door to her right banged open. Kaiya turned, and again was surprised to find herself staring into the excited dark blue eyes of a six year old Mish and a much younger looking Battré. Inwardly she laughed. Even at such a young age Mish was wearing a pair of headphones around his neck. He began to dance around the room, singing in a happy voice, but the sound was muffled, almost as if he were speaking through wall. Something about the way he was acting was playing the strings of Kaiya's memory. She frowned, racking her brains; and then it clicked, like a switch being thrown and she backpedalled in horror. The song that the younger version of Michael Collins was singing, was Happy Birthday. NO! Thought Kaiya, This is the last thing I want to remember…
But it was no use, and all she could do was dread the coming moments, as her nightmare took her for a stroll down memory lane.
The six year old Mish grabbed her hands and said "What's wrong Kai? Why aren't you happy? Today's the day! You get your guardian! Aren't you excited?"
He pulled her forward and the child-Battré took her other hand. She resisted. "But what happens if it doesn't like me?" Her five year old self asked Mish and Battré.
"Why wouldn't they?" Battré smiled.
Kaiya let them pull her though the entry hall and felt the old excitement of her younger self as she looked forward to meeting her guardian. Kaiya broke into a run when they all reached the stairs that lead to the entry hall of her house. I was lined with streamers and balloons of all different shapes and colours.
"Hey wait up Kaiya!"
"Catch me if you can!" she laughed.
Running across the hall, not waiting for her best friend to catch up to her, she arrived at the living room. It was covered in even more balloons and streamer than the hall. Some of her friends were crowded around a large pile of presents.
The dream shifted. Now the light was fading slowly, and her, Mish and Battré were the only ones in the room. They were playing with some of the toys that Kaiya had received. She was playing with a princess doll, the other two pretending to be evil monsters that were keeping her locked away. The muffled sound of her mother's voice, and Mish's parents could be heard in the next room.
"Is it time yet?" complained Mish.
"Mumma said I was born at 5 o'clock, so I think that's when she'll come."
"How do you know it will be a she? It might be a booooooy." Mish teased, jumping out of Kaiya's reach.
"Will not!"
"Will too! You're more like a boy anyway Kaiya!" Mish poked out his tongue and pulled a face.
"Will not! Mumma! Michael's being mean!"
Kaiya's mother rushed in and picked up her daughter, holding her like she was the most precious thing on the face of the earth. "He's only teasing Kaiya, don't let him annoy you. Dry your eyes now, it's almost time."
Kaiya wriggled out of her mother's grip just as the grandfather clock struck five. She ran to the window, spun around and held her breath.
One… nothing.
Two… still nothing.
Three… something was wrong, when Mish had gotten his guardian it hadn't taken this long.
Four… Kaiya looked up, her mother's face was contorting strangely.
Five.
Nothing.
Kaiya looked around in confusion. Everyone was standing where they had been before. There was no-one else in the room… Except an eyeless face that flickered in the fire, its lips were sewn shut, but were grinning at her through the flames. She blinked as tears began to spill over her cheeks, and looked again, but it was gone, disappeared along with her excitement, and all hope that she'd had for meeting her guardian, like dust in the wind. She felt a sob rising in her throat. "M…maybe the clock wherever the guardians come from is broke…" Mish ventured hopefully.
Battré was looking at her with a confused expression. Another sob broke out of her throat and her vision blurred while the young Michael walked over to her and hugged her awkwardly, the way little kids do. Then he started shaking her roughly. "Stop it Mish, wha-, what are you doing?"
Kaiya opened her eyes. She was in the student council room, sitting at a desk, with a tally below her. Mish had his hand on her shoulders, and was looking at her with concern. Slowly Kaiya realised that there were tears streaming down her face. She reached a hand up to touch them. "What…?" She asked faintly.
Mish blinked and then took her into a rough hug. "It's okay Kai. You're back where you belong, not in the past." He whispered.
Kaiya buried her head on his shoulder. Silently she thanked whoever had made Mish her next door neighbour. Having no siblings and a quiet mother made for a lonely childhood, but Mish had been there to keep her company for as long as she could remember. It had always been his door that she had knocked on, when she was upset, and it had always been Mish that had been able to stop the tears. He was just like a big brother.
The door to the student council room opened and Alexandra marched in, followed by Zane, Gabriel and a short black haired girl who was stumbling over her own feet. It took a moment for Kaiya to realise that it was Ayame, the school's art captain. Alexandra started when she noticed Mish and Kaiya. "Are we interrupting something?" she asked.
Kaiya and Mish broke apart, shaking their heads. Kaiya wiped her eyes to hide the tears. "It's okay, I had a nightmare, it's nothing." She mumbled.
Mish knuckled her on the head. "Idiot, don't tell her that, she'll turn into even more of a monster than she already is."
Zane was backing away slowly, followed by Gabriel and Ayame. Alexandra was shaking.
"You. Fell. Asleep?" the shaking increased and the blonde girl looked up. She looked like she was about to explode.
"You already passed out during my welcome to school speech. WHY THE HELL DID YOU FALL ASLEEP?"
"You'd think she would have slept enough" Zane joked, but was silenced by a glare from the head girl.
Alexandra Fairland grabbed a rolled up paper and launched herself at Kaiya, swinging it like a sword. Kaiya ran behind the desk.
"I'm sorry! It's just, I was doing the tallies, and it's so boring, I guess i…"
"Then why are you our treasurer?" Alexandra raged.
And then, giving up on catching Kaiya, she threw the paper. It hit Kaiya square on the forehead, and she dropped like a sack of potatoes, nursing a read mark.
"My head." She groaned.
But Alexandra wasn't finished, marching around to the other side of the table, the girl picked up her fallen weapon and moved slowly towards Kaiya.
"H..hey, A..Alex? You already hit her once, d..don't you t..think that's enough?" a quiet voice stuttered.
"Do you object to my choice of punishment?" Alexandra turned around and gave Ayame a death stare.
The girl squealed and hid behind Zane and Gabriel. Mish was no-where to be seen. The paper was slowly raised. "I can't believe she's gone this crazy just because I fell asleep" Kaiya groaned.
She was cowering against the wall, while Alexandra stood over her, holding the paper like a lunatic with a knife. Kaiya braced herself for the blow as she saw the paper descend, but it never came. Instead, she heard Alexandra squeal and drop the paper, and a voice, speaking quietly, with restrained anger say; "enough Alexandra. Falling asleep doesn't warrant a beating, now calm down. And Michael! You could have stopped this!"
Battré was standing in front of Kaiya. He had caught Alex's arm as it came down, and was holding it tightly.
"I can see you Michael, get out here."
Slowly Mish crawled out from underneath the table.
"When did he-?" Gabriel began, but Battré cut her off.
"You could have stopped this." He repeated quietly.
"I kno-"
"THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU?" he roared at Mish.
Inwardly Kaiya winced, not once in all of the time she had known Battré, had she heard him raise his voice above the normal room noise. This time it was Alexandra's turn to cower behind Zane. Kaiya glanced back to her best friend.
"She was scary…" Mish had paled visibly.
If it wasn't for the painful welt on her forehead, Kaiya would have laughed. He was standing in the middle of the room, looking like a child who was being lectured by their parents. A wave of dizziness swept over her. She groaned. Battré seemed to notice her for the first time. He held out his hand to help her up. When he was satisfied that she wasn't going to collapse he said, "You okay Kai? Here let me take a look at that."
The blue haired angel passed his hand over the bump on Kaiya's forehead. She felt the pain ease, and then fade entirely. She rubbed her forehead gingerly. The bump was completely gone.
"Thanks." She said, a little surprised.
"We couldn't have you turn up injured to your own birthday party now, could we?" he replied, then winked.
"Birthday party? Wha..?"
"she's a little slow today isn't she?" Gabriel chided, "we're not going to let you miss out on celebrating it!"
"But I don't want to celebrate it." Kaiya frowned.
The student council was surrounding her now. Zane and Mish towering over an already tall Alexandra. Gabriel smiling, much less intimidating, standing next to Zane, and the small, unbelievably shy Ayame, who looked like she was trying to shrink. Zane stepped forward and Kaiya backed away, or tried to, she was against the wall. The look on Zane's face worried her, like he was going to do something evil. She was right. He bent down, pretending to tie his shoelace, and the next thing Kaiya knew, her feet her off the ground and she was being swung around. Kaiya shrieked at Zane to let her down. The rest of the student council laughed and began to sing happy birthday.
Colours whirled around, blending into a dizzying rainbow. Kaiya stopped trying to focus, the effort was making her feel sick. Just as she was about to give up on Zane letting her go, the same face she'd been seeing all day jumped out at her from the other side of the room. She jerked so hard that Zane stumbled and dropped her, both of them landing in a tangle of sprawling limbs on the floor. The council stopped their chorus. Kaiya heard the owner of the face chuckle. Her heart was hammering so hard that she thought her rib cage would shatter. There was no way she could have been imagining this. It was the third time she's seen it. Kaiya scrambled away from Zane and backed up against the wall. Her eyes slid past the concerned faces of her friends to the thing at the back of the room. It was grinning at her through stitched lips. Kaiya's eyes widened in horror when she saw the scythe that it drew from nowhere. She pointed at it, trying to warn her friends, but as suddenly as it had appeared, it was gone again. She looked about, in confusion, wondering where it had gone. Her question was answered when she heard a giggle to her left and felt something breathing into her ear. The stench of rot mad her want to gag. The thing reached through the wall and pulled her into a sort of embrace. Kaiya began to tremble and tried once more to form word of warning to her friends, but nothing would come out. Then, it spoke; "don't you get it?" its voice was cold and heartless, but distinctly male, "you're the only one who can see me…"
It giggled again, the sound was sickening, like someone choking on their own blood. It grinned and then disappeared, reappearing in front of Kaiya, leaning over her, the sickle at her throat, "for now…" it breathed.
Whether it was out of fear or something else Kaiya didn't know, but somehow she managed to get her body moving again. Kaiya lashed out at what she now thought was a man, catching him off guard and pushing him into the desks, but before he hit them, he disappeared, yet again.
Kaiya scrambled to her feet, frantically searching for the laughing man. He materialized right in front of her, so she bent her head down and rammed him with her shoulder. His grin faltered as he stumbled and Kaiya took the opportunity to bolt from the room, while the shouts of the other council members echoed after her. Running through the school's entrance hall, she ducked through the front door and sprinted as fast as she could, down the stairs, almost falling in her haste. All the while, the horrifying laughter followed her.
Kaiya reached one of the many cars that waited off school grounds, almost falling into the expensively upholstered leather front seat. The shocked looking driver just stared at her until she gave him her address and yelled at him to hurry.
When they arrived back at her home, Kaiya handed the driver a $100 bill and ran up to the front porch. She could still hear the hollow laughter. Fumbling with the lock, the door creaked open and she all but launched herself through, slamming it with a bang and sinking slowly down onto her knees. Silence. Wherever he was, the laughing man couldn't follow her here. Kaiya breathed a sigh of relief and got to her feet, making her way to the tower that made up her bedroom.

please keep in mind that i'm writing it so that i can adapt it into a manga, so the way it's told (as in the digressions) is sometimes not entirely conventional

BAAAH! That thing is so WEIRD! Really awesome job! I want to keep reading. I also can't wait to see how it is in manga form. It's gonna be SOOO GOOOOD!

Favourite moments:
1) The scene inside her house as she's waiting for her guardian. The mental image I'm getting is really nice. It feels so cozy! (except for freaky blood-chuckle guy...)
2) "You fell asleep in my welcome speech! TAKE-A DIS!" *wallop wallop wallop*
3) "Drat...all out of million-dollar cheques. Did father drop his wallet on the front drive again? No? Oh dear, you'll just have to settle for this $100 I suppose."
